Excessive Political Correctness Essay - 1534 Words

Excessive Political Correctness Companies are afraid. Very afraid. They are not offending anyone, catering to all ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds, and being â€Å"politically correct† in every sense of the word. In fear of offending any potential customers they might have, companies adopt an â€Å"all-inclusive† approach to their image. Advertisements depicting groups of people of identical race have become an endangered species; all walks of life are being crammed into any group of people representing a logo. This practice may seem insignificant, but it has infiltrated everything, everywhere, and has reached an unrealistic level. Burger King had good intentions in creating the Kid’s Club in 1990. The group pictured below†¦show more content†¦The BK Kid’s Club was the beginning of an era. Other companies began scrambling to represent all ethnic groups in advertisements that might boost sales of their product, and always depicted this hand-chosen group of diverse p eople having the time of their lives together, mingling without any racial tension and enjoying the product being pushed. The Limited Too ad above is a classic example of the â€Å"over-P.C.† advertisement. It shows a White, Black, and Asian girl, hugging each other while laughing and smiling—probably about their wonderful clothes that obviously any girl can wear. The girl in the center is even wearing a shirt that reads â€Å"Best Friends Forever†, a subtle indicator that the three girls are BFFL (Best Friends For Life). To add insult to injury, Limited Too recycles this theme and uses the three girls again in another version of the initial advertisement, shown here. It’s pretty safe to say that a Hispanic girl would have been added to the shots if the text at the right wasn’t immediately necessary. At first glance the American Eagle advertisement above seems to only be targeting the average, rambunctious, White teenager just looking for a wh olesome good time playing tug-of-war—but look again. Sustainable Business Development-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp

Question: Define the Concept of a Business Model. Answer: Business model is a portrait of a companys framework of business operation. It states the methods of revenue generation of a company. It is one of the important things for a startup company to form before product development. It often shows the factors about the operation of the company. It can also be the selling of products or services, changing subscription fee, and many more to generate revenue. It is often confused with the business plan. Business model is a part of business plan, where business plan is a much bigger concept (Bocken et al. 2014). The essay is comprised of different definition of business model followed by a brief discussion of e-business model archetype, business model as an activity system and a business model as cost revenue architecture. A brief explanation of the term business context and an argument is drawn with an example. Use of these conceptualized business models in solving static and dynamic problems is also highlighted in the following. The term business model is used to explain the key components of a business. According to Teece, the success of an organization is contingent upon its business model. It is the hypothesis of the customers demand and the organizations approach in meeting them and making high margin of profit out of it. Chesbrough and Rosenbloom summed up the definition as the way of articulating the value proposition, selection of appropriate technology and features, identification of target market segments, defining the structure of the value chain and estimating the cost structure and profit potential (Mishra and Zachary 2014). E-business model archetypes describe 7 abstract business model archetypes from which every single business model in inherited. A holistic view of the possibilities is represented in the course. All the 7 abstracts of business model archetypes are combined and put under 2 categories that are primary and secondary archetypes which in turn can be related to different business matching their criteria (Plenter et al. 2017). The primary archetype is comprised of product, service and trade. The product develops a tangible good and sells on a one-time fee basis. It requires a high up-front sunk capital, but is able to leverage economies of scale. There are two hallmarks of a product which are properties and online prototypes. The properties comprise of the features like sell of one-time fee, up-front investment and highly scalable, whereas, the online prototypes comprises of content product and software product. Second primary archetype is the service where intangible work for a client is mo netized on a per-use basis. It is characterized by low sunk costs but high float cost requirements. The technicians and professionals with limited capital and expert knowledge prefers it. High float or low sunk cost, intangible value creation, service agency and platform as a service are the hallmarks of service. The last but not the least, trade archetype is to provide the products the prospective customers seek and make profit on the spread between sell price and cost of acquisition. It seeks good sourcing connection and moderate capital. Brokerage, marketplace, ecosystem and subscription are categorized under secondary archetypes. The use of brokerage archetype is to source on behalf of a client for a retainer or per-transaction fee. On the other hand, marketplace creates a platform that facilitates trade, not the actual trading. It depends on bringing together the sufficient demand and supply. It is a tertiary archetype of, which brings together all the three primary archetypes. It is the most difficult of all archetypes to achieve. Subscription archetypes are a popular mixture of a service and a product. The most frequent examples are software as content and a service. It replaces the bulk purchase cost with monthly subscription in low cost. It is a profitable way to reduce the up-front cost. For the business, if reduces the up-front cost and the dependency upon a marketplace (Fielt 2013). E-book archives are the best examples of this kind. This particular business model helps in analyzing and describing the function of an organization within the overall market landscape. The details like target customer base, business input and dependence and value creation on behalf of the customers can be obtained from these business models. These models are often useful in solving the strategic disputes, strength, opportunity, and weakness identification by comparing the attributes of other organizations using similar model. Zott and Amit suggests that the Activity System supplements the firm to concert with its partners, which in turn will create value and appropriate a share of that value. Basing on the empirical and theoretical research, it can be suggested that, two there are two possible sets of parameters that activity system designers need to consider. They are themes that describe the sources of the activity systems value creation and elements that explain the architecture of an activity system. (Zott, Amit and Massa 2011). This model helps in analyzing the code of conduct of a business and how the factors are linked with product markets. It contributes in addressing all the important issues in management, provide a conceptual toolbox in addressing the problems, and engage in insightful dialogue and creative design. Revenue architecture is the building blocks of revenue growth of a company. Business model can be connected with the cost or revenue architecture in the area of sale and marketing. Revenue architecture according to Zott is used for technology management and innovation scholars interested in explaining the mechanism that allows an organization to commercialize technological innovation. It helps a business align their marketing and sales value chain and drive revenue performance. Buyers in present times are self educated about the web and expect a unified experience across channels. The organizations need a more integrated revenue architecture which blends right strategies, program and system. Using the multi-affiliated model, different design, strategy, technology and media are brought together for todays new marketing challenges. Business context is used in expressing business problem and proposes the goodness and scope of the project. It also indentifies the significant persons in the organization with key role in the business domain or in a business process. The interested areas which are relevant to scope of the work and to bring potential change which require exploration and further analysis are also identified. It is needed to kick-start a project or to correct the context models through the project. It depends on the need or style of the project. There are various contexts diagrams used by various organizations such as current state, future state, environment diagram, network diagram, business process diagrams, system diagrams, relationship maps, organization chart and many more (Saidani, Rolland and Nurcan 2015). So, eventually, every business needs to undergo changes in course of time in their business mode. The company under study is an US based international e-business named eBay. Like any other companies in the industry, eBays depends on technology and expansion into foreign market. It is basically a service company who offers a platform for the seller and the buyer which is unique in character for which the company earns a portion of the profit. The forum has created value for the network members, through which, the company broaden their business relationship, which ensured their longtime survival. As the company doesnt have to spend for traditional warehousing, returns, shipping and overstock, it gets easier for them to increase their profit margin. The company occupies 80% of the online-auction market. Their primary competitor is Amazon whos model has a the high chances of cost of sales and achieves a gross profit of only 24%. It is clear that the company under study surpluses Amazons profit three times (stjohns.edu 2017). Value chain is used to identify the business activities nec essary to create value and competitive advantage to the business. As the massive scale of eBay business operations, the economic scale for the company is under the major source of value in inbound logistics. Strong customer relationship base is also the key source of value in eBays inbound logistics. As mention, eBay has a strong technological base that carries out the operations of the company. The outbound logistics of the company is to ship products to the customers. They constantly need to regulate and monitor the system. The marketing and sales expenses are low compared to their competitors in the market. From the above value chain analysis, it can be spotted that the company requires bringing change in their value chain. The problems that is currently faced by the company is the dependence of the business on a range of products and services controlled by competitors such as Google, an overall business model and an absence of the companys own distribution. It is a weakness for the company that needs prior attention to faces challenges from their major competitors like Amazon (iosrjournals.org 2017). This change will again impact their current service archetype model which will require changes according to the change in value chain. It can be concluded from the above essay, that the business models that are available in the market are industry specific. Different industry requires different business model for getting success. A detailed theoretical description is given in the essay and the use of the models has been given in brief. The proper model used in proper settings can bring success to the business. For example, the model of the highlighted company can be related with the service archetype model of the theory that was explained above. The business context and changes required in a business is highlighted at the last part of the essay with example drawn from eBay, an international e-commerce business. The current value chain of the company is properly described with explanation of the changes required in the value chain, which will result in modification of their service model archetype. Ancient Works of Literature

Introduction Although the world is full of ancient literature, very few of these existed before the twelfth century and those that existed before then serve as pointers to the past way of life. By reading such works, a person is able to get an understanding on the beliefs and customs that were practiced in the ancient world.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ancient Works of Literature specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In addition, reading ancient literature gives people an understanding on how they are supposed to conduct their lives by basing it to that of the characters in those works. Unlike today, most ancient works of literature were meant to educate people on the right way of living. Personally, I view ancient literature as a source of entertainment and inspiration. Some of the ancient works of literature that I have read and which have been a great help to my life are Beowulf and Medea. In this paper, I will explain why these two works of literature interest me and then I will outline their relevance to my life and to the modern society. While reading Beowulf, one thing that I found interesting was how the characters conduct themselves. Although the play contains much violence, nearly all the characters fight for worthy causes. In the play, Beowulf who is the hero fights for causes, which he believes are meant to better humankind. Beowulf’s life inspires me and gives me the desire to pursue only the causes that can benefit the society. On his part, Hrothgar the Denmark king is described as a nice person who is concerned about the welfare of all his subjects. According to the author, the king is â€Å"given such glory of war, such honor of combat, that all his kin obey him gladly till great grow his band of youthful comrades.† (Francis) the character of the king teaches me the importance of humbleness regardless of the position that I hold in the society. By examining the character of Unferth, I am able to learn the danger of being jealous of my colleague’s achievements. In the play, Grendel the monster can be used to signify people who oppress others in the society. Pushed by hatred, Grendel goes around ensuring that people do not have peace. This is best presented in the occasion where Grendel killed thirty soldiers for no other reason but that â€Å"he heard each day the din of revel high in the hall: their harps ringing out, and the clear song of the singer.† (Francis). This character can be likened to the case where some people in society deny others the privilege of having things that they themselves do not need.Advertising Looking for essay on literature languages? The character of Hrothgar is a good example of how those in authority are supposed to govern. The ki ng is depicted as a nice person who has the sense â€Å"to build his henchmen a hall uprear, a master mead-house, mightier far than ever was seen by the sons of earth.† (Francis) Hrothgar’s character is in contrast with that of many modern leaders who live comfortably while their military lives in deplorable conditions. Upon hearing news of the monster, Beowulf travels from Geats to Denmark to eliminate it. Beowulf’s actions are in contrast with our modern day leaders who are less concerned with the welfare of their neighboring countries. (Francis) Another lesson that the modern society can learn from the Beowulf story is on the danger of excessive drinking. When Grendel walks into the Heorot Hall, he is able to kill many soldiers because they are drunk and they cannot fight back. Just like the Denmark soldiers, many people today are destroyed after they have had too much to drink. The Beowulf story therefore serves as a warning to people to shun alcoholism. Fin ally, the Beowulf story highlights the importance of courage to an individual and to the society. It is interesting to note that the monster scared the Denmark army for twelve years but it took Beowulf only one day to kill it. Later on in the play, the importance of character is repeated when Beowulf battles a dragon that has burned his castle. In this case, only his young assistant Wiglaf comes to his rescue and they both kill the dragon. Put together, those two episodes demonstrate to us the importance of being courageous when faced with an impossible mission. (Francis) Apart from Beowulf, another legendary story that I find interesting is Medea. This story by Euripides highlights the plight of women and their role in the society. When Jason embarks on the Golden Fleece mission, he realizes that he cannot win on his own and decides to exploit Medea’s wisdom to fulfill his quest. Jason convinces Medea to help him on the promise that he will marry her after they complete the mission.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ancient Works of Literature specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In the process, Medea ends up betraying her own family and killing her brother. From the beginning, it is possible to notice that Jason only pretends to love Medea in order to take advantage of her gift. Once he achieves his plans, he â€Å"dumps† her and marries another girl from the Corinth royal family in order to secure his royal citizenship. This clearly shows that Jason had hoodwinked Medea from the beginning and made her believe that he had pure intentions for her while in the real sense he was only using her for his own selfish ambitions. (Euripides) By following the lesson outlined in the story, I am able to look out for people whose agenda is to use me as a ladder to access higher things in life. Like Jason, such people leave us disappointed and with the duty of fixing the mistakes we made while trying to please them. This is best seen when Medea is exiled from Corinth for killing the King’s daughter. At the same time, it becomes hard for her to return to her home country since she had caused the death of her brother while trying to aid Jason. Once Medea realizes how Jason has tricked her, she decides to cry â€Å"out to the gods to witness  how Jason is repaying her favors.† According to Euripides, Medea gets to a point where â€Å"She just lies there. She won’t eat—her body she surrenders to the pain, wasting away, always in tears, ever since she found out how her husband has dishonoured her. She’s not lifted her eyes up from the ground, or raised her head.† (Euripides) By reading the Medea’s story, I am able to watch out for people with Jason’s character. If women in the society can learn how to spot people with such character, the pain of betrayal that majority of them go through would considerably be minimized. By reading the Medea story, I am also able to learn what a scorned woman can do. When Medea realizes that Jason has deceived her despite the sacrifices she has made, she goes on a revenge mission that leaves many people dead. The first thing that she does is to kill Jason’s bride and her father who happens to be the king of Corinth.Advertising Looking for essay on literature languages? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Later on, she kills her own children to ensure that Jason has no heirs that can continue his lineage. Later on, Medea escapes to Athens using a dragon-drawn chariot leaving behind Jason to mourn his family. By reading this story, I am able to realize the folly of playing with a woman’s emotions. On top of this, I am also able to appreciate the roles that women play in my life and in society. (Euripides) Conclusion Medea and Beowulf are among one of the finest stories written before the twelfth century. Although the stories have been in existence for more than two and half millenniums, the moral lessons that they offer are still relevant in modern society. By reading these stories, a person is able to draw inspiration and strength from the characters in the play. On the other hand, the stories act as a reference point for individuals to examine their lives against those of the characters. This enables us to correct the areas where we have gone astray and to improve on the area s where we fall short of expectations. Apart from individuals, the modern society also has much to learn from these stories. Works Cited Francis, Erik. Beowulf, 06 May. 2010. Web. http://www.alcyone.com/max/lit/beowulf/i.html Euripides. Free Essays on Anti-semitism

European anti-Semitism was the building blocks for Nazi propaganda. European anti-Semitism is an outgrowth of Christianity. Since the time of the Roman Empire, Christian leaders preached boundlessly against Jews. It escalated from generation to generation, and as long as the Jews rejected Jesus as their Messiah, they were going against the whole belief system of Christianity. The idea that the Jews killed their savior also arose from that time period, bringing forward the notion that all Jews of forever were responsible for Jesus’ death. As the Medieval period came, the Christians’ hatred for Jews further articulated and was brought to a new level. The Christians in the medieval world saw Jews in twofold opposition to Christianity: they rejected his revelation and were his killers. Church members had much detested the Jews on the basis that they should have accepted Jesus as their Messiah. Consequently, persecution and killing of the Jews became a part of everyd ay life, leaving many regions of Western Europe without any Jews by the end of the sixteenth century. Entering the nineteenth century, German anti-Semitism went through an acute transformation. It was then that it made its change from a religious issue, to a very racial one. Germans naturally detested Jews with a passion. Nineteenth century Germans now saw Jews as the symbol for everything wrong in their declining economy, even though they made up but a mere one percent of the population. Soon the cultural taboos that had formerly shaped the moral fabric of Germany at the time lost all influence. It was then that German anti-Semitism reached a high point: false, cruel, yet indisputable accusations. By the time the Nazi party instituted totalitarian control, all that remained was to build on the framework provided by the nineteenth century. A framework which included anti-Semitism being common knowledge, Germans’ obsessive hatred toward Jews, the common beli... Free Essays on Anti-semitism After learning about the Holocaust, I’ve asked myself many times how this could have happened. Why would anyone believe it’s acceptable to massacre an entire people? This is my reasoning for writing my paper on how Christian theology influenced anti-Semitism. Much of the Holocaust appears to have it’s beginning with Christian theology. I will begin my paper with the early writings of Christians and continue chronologically until after World War II. The Apostle Paul was one the first people to criticize the Jewish people. At first, he tried to explain to the Christians not to adopt a superior attitude towards the Jews. IF THE PART OF THE DOUGH OFFERED AS FIRST FRUITS IS HOLY, THEN THE WHOLE BRANCH IS HOLY; AND IF THE ROOT IS HOLY, THEN THE BRANCHES ARE ALSO HOLY†¦DO NOT BOAST OVER THE BRANCHES. IF YOU DO BOAST, REMEMBER THAT IT IS NOT YOU THAT SUPPORT THE ROOT, BUT THE ROOT SUPPORTS YOU. [ROMANS 11] At one point this appeared to be Paul’s feeling towar ds the Jews and the Christians. His sentiment appeared to change, according to Christian suppressionists. In the text Romans, many of Paul’s statements were misinterpreted by those Christians to make themselves appear more superior to the Jewish people. †¦INCLUDING US WHOM HE HAS CALLED, NOT FROM THE JEWS ONLY BUT ALSO FROM THE GENTILES? Dworkins Distinction Between Ethics and Morality Essay

Dworkins Distinction Between Ethics and Morality - Essay Example Certainly, morals are informed by both â€Å"majorities† and â€Å"minorities†4 and it, therefore, makes sense that standards are set, regulated and enforced by via executive functions. For Dworkin, it is within this paradigm that the political community exists. The political community is a pivotal point of individual and collective identity. Depending on whether or not the political community is successful or not, members of the community will either perceive that the political community enhances the quality of our lives or limits it.5 According to Dworkin, morals and religions differ and conflict among groups and thus it is impossible to construct a universal legal or communal code that embodies all moral and religious ideologies and values. Thus, political communities set limits and standards for all.6 In this regard, Dworkin’s conceptualization of the relationship between morality and ethics explains the relationship between morality and the law in a way that is consistent with Rawls’ idea of justice.7 For Rawls, justice is achieved by setting standards, but by avoiding prohibiting moral and religious beliefs that deviate from the established standards. A just society instead will tolerate the views of others.8 Similarly, Dworkin advocates for a political framework that takes a neutral stance in that it does not favor one set of religious or moral values over another.9 Rawls conceptualization of justice and the political community is more realistic than Dworkin’s theory. It is conceivable that a legal and/or political framework can set and enforce specific moral standards and at the same time recognize and tolerate other religious and moral standards that are different from the normative standard. This would accord with ideas of equality. Thus Rawls’ theory of political liberalism makes more sense than Dworkin’s theory of liberal community. Dworkin advocates for a neutral framework while admitting that it is impossible to formulate a universal moral code. Arguably, in order to be neutral, the political community’s framework must reflect the common values of all members of the community. The values and morals of some members of the political community will be left out since the liberal community must determine and set standards for all to follow. Therefore, Dworkin’s theory of liberal community is a bit contradictory. Nevertheless, Dworkin insists that law and the liberal community that informs the law is beneficial to members of the community because it formulates standards thus facilitating fairness and certainty. It also ensures that members of the community are treated equally and thus makes the community more sincere and enhances the moral rationale for the exercise of executive powers.10 The difficulty with this aspect of Dworkin’s reasoning, however, is that the executive may decide to treat all members of a community with equal oppression.11 In such a case, w ould the executive have a moral justification for the exercise of its powers? The answer according to Gough and Stables is found in Dworkin’s general assumption that the liberal community is structured around respect for rights and dignity of the members of the community.

The Methodology of Three International University Ranking Systems Essay

The Methodology of Three International University Ranking Systems - Essay Example The three major international ranking systems that are used for this purpose are The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Rankings of World Universities as well as The CHE ExcellenceRanking 2010 (Gallagher, 2011). The essay will start off with a definition of the university league tables and how they work, reasons for their popularity and the substantial growth in their use over the past years. Next, it will explore various areas in relation with the league tables such as critical analysis of the three ranking systems to gauge their strengths and weaknesses, debate on the evidentiary basis of league tables to explain the criteria upon which the universities are ranked and criticism as well as the limitations to the validity of university ranking systems. Lastly, it will single out the methodology that stands out. The need for and growth of ranking systems: The world is in the process of getting preoccupied with rankings more and more every d ay. Just like scarcity, having access to the ‘finest’ as well as prestige more or less mark the purchase of almost every commodity in our daily lives, so are the customers of the tertiary sector continuously looking out for pointers that improve their capability to know and access the best in the tertiary sector (Salmi & Saroyan, 2007). Criteria for measuring the rankings: In most of the university ranking tables, the criteria used to measure the rankings is: To be distinct about what the ranking will measure. To use a variety of indicators and multiple procedures rather than a single, weighted ranking. To associate comparable programs or institutions. At the institutional level, use rankings for planned preparation and quality enhancement purposes. At the government level, use rankings to kindle a philosophy of quality. Use rankings as one of the tools available to notify and update students, families and employers and encourage public debate (Salmi & Saroyan, 2007) An alysis of the ranking systems: Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) rankings were formulated in 1998 and were more formally known as ‘The Academic Rankings of the World Universities’ (ARWU). Universities that have field medallists; highly cited researchers as well as Nobel laureates are included in the ranking. According to this criterion, ARWU is not trying to compare all the universities throughout the world; instead it is targeting the world’s top research universities only. ARWU initially picks out around 1000 universities from throughout the world, of which only 500 are later on ranked in the league tables. For all ARWU indicators, data is usually collected from third parties that include the official site of the Nobel Prize as well as numerous Thomson Reuters websites in order to access citation and publications (Rauhvargers, 2011). Moving on to ‘The Times higher Education World University Rankings’, it is apparent that, published in 2004, it w as an ‘answer’ to the Shanghai ARWU rankings. The indicated drive of ‘The World University Rankings’ is â€Å"to recognise universities as the multi-faceted organisations that they are, to provide a global comparison of their success against the notional mission of remaining or becoming world-class† (Salmi & Saroyan, 2007). This ranking separates 300 in each of the five faculty areas as well as about 600 universities and uses sources such as incorporate surveys from individual academics and researchers, employer organisations, third-party data as well as university information (Salmi & Saroyan, 2007). Lastly, The CHE Centre for Higher Education Development that designed an ‘

Earth Studies Essay Example for Free

Earth Studies Essay Sheenagh Pugh gives us a very depressing view of the future in her trilogy of poems known as the Earth Studies. She gives us these views by writing very descriptive and atmospheric poems subtly conveying her opinion on world pollution. All her poems tell stories at different times of earths extinction for example: The Craft I left in was called Esau was set just when the survivors left the now extinct earth, And Geography 1 and Do you think well ever get to see Earth, Sir were set when the survivors are in a different place, probably a planet.   In Sheenagh Pughs poems, the mood and atmosphere are very important as it helps her convey her opinion to her readers. And also it makes her poems interesting to read. The first poem that I am going to analyse is The Craft I left in was called Esau which is the first in the Earth Studies trilogy. This poem tells the story of human survivors leaving Earth because they destroyed it. The poems title refers to the parable of Esau, who swapped his inheritance for a bowel of potage. This is suggesting that humans made a bad barging as Esau did.  My first example of Sheenagh Pugh creating good atmosphere from The Craft I left in was called Esau is lines 10-11 when she says No bother, No big deal. I can t recall feeling sad I think this creates good atmosphere because it seems to be said very hollowly, conveying a large sense of falseness among the readers, it is as if the writer is saying something to try and hide emotion, which tells me that the writer really means the opposite. My second example from The Craft I left in was called Esau is in line 6-7 when she says People joked nervously; just like a plane flight. I think this creates a good atmosphere with good use of the simile just like a plane flight because it is something that the readers can relate to. Also the phrase nervously joked conveys the general mood of the survivors, who are on the flight, which is uncertainty and fear. My third example is from line 8 which says they found seats and wondered if their bags would fit I think this phrase discreetly shows atmosphere as the survivors are worrying over the most trivial things such as whether their bags fit after they just left their home planet because they misused its resources which caused it to be destroyed. I think that they are doing this to try and blank the past from their minds. The second poem is called Do you think well ever get to see Earth, Sir. It is about two people talking about visiting Earth on excursion trips. I think this is set in around 20 years after The craft I left in was called Esau as it states that the writer used to live on Earth. The poem starts with in a very sad atmosphere, the poem is very sad and pessimistic, an example of this is you wont see what it once was. This shows that the writer is still very sad because of earth being destroyed; it conveys the writers opinion and sensitivity very well. From line 11 the poem does not create much atmosphere but it does use very beautiful descriptive language to create an overall happy mood. The start of this is But if you see some beautiful thing But signals that there is going to be a change to the mood of the poem. It also starts using very uncommon words such as damascened (which means: something is decorated by inlaying or encrusting a pattern) and iridescence (which means: spectrum of luminous or shimmering colours). One of the best examples of description I have ever read in a poem is look at it as if you were made of eyes, as if you were nothing but an eye, lidless and tender. To be probed and scorched by extreme light. I think that the aforementioned description is an amazing way of personification because it is totally original, A completely different way of describing something. Also the ending is very nicely phrased to make it sound soppy and could bring tears to some peoples eyes. The third poem is called Geography one and is about a futuristic geography class where none of the children had ever seen Earth before. This is the last in the Earth Studies trilogy and is a very similar the first 2 poems because some of it is very descriptive and is very emotional. In this story the teacher is showing her class slides of a volcanic region called Surtsey, which she briefly saw while she was on Earth. This helps her remember her experiences. Also this poem carries the moral of cherish the moment.  My first example of discretion and mood is from line 6 Now here you see the terrific spray, the water heaved aside as the rock was thrown up. The first part of this describes the water as a terrific spray, which is usually seen when waves crash against something, i.e. when it hits a boat. Also the waves must have been quite big as it managed to throw up a rock. My second example is from line 22-25 The man here is a warden, guarding his little world from any interference, letting it grow as it was meant to I think this phrase shows that the writer appreciates this mans view otherwise she would not have brought him up. I also think that she envies him for having his own little world, which is his and his alone. My last example is from line 28 until the end. I saw it one day in passing; it was a few years old. Just an offshore island, a stony outline softened with lichen. Someone said thats Surtsey, and I said fancy that, but I hadnt time to look properly Conclusion I think that Sheenagh Pugh is a very effective writer, but I do not think that she is that good a poet because I usually associate poetry with Rhyming words. I personally think that she should think of becoming a proper author and that she should convert her poems into short stories. I think that she is very effective at describing things and adding her own feelings. I think that in her fist poem The craft I left in was called Esau that she was very good at creating atmosphere and tension. In the other two poems, she was great at describing images.  I agree with her that we are careless with resources and that someone will have to come up with an answer soon. I think that the second poem Do you think we will ever get to see earth, sir was my favourite poem as it had lots of description.

Power of Dance in Music Videos :: Performance Arts Dancing Essays

Power of Dance in Music Videos When VH1 got a panel of â€Å"music industry experts† together to decide on a list of the greatest music videos ever, it was Fatboy Slim’s â€Å"Weapon of Choice† that was the video of choice. Close behind on the list were videos for songs such as Madonna’s â€Å"Vogue† and Jackson’s â€Å"Thriller.† It seems to me that there is a significant theme all of these videos share†¦DANCE! Berkeley had it right. If you want a song to catch on, put it with a moving body. And if the body happens to be the king or queen of pop, that doesn’t hurt. So what if the dancer is a certain Hollywood bad boy wearing TAP SHOES? The equation between Walken and Fatboy Slim’s song results in one of the most thought provoking and fresh musical video ideas ever. There is such a strong power that lies within the combination of the music and dance, especially when it is caught artistically within the eye of a camera. The â€Å"Weapon of Choice† video begins with a normal middle-aged man, Walken, sitting in a hotel lobby. Once the music fades in, the scene comes to life with motion. From then on all rules of expectation are broken. As Michael Abernethy notes, â€Å"It is a fantasy many of us have had, to dance abandon in an environment that screams for civilized behavior†(1). This scene, although not impossible in our everyday lives, is very rare. Once Walken takes his hoofing steps right on out to the balcony and into mid-air this is when the camera begins to works its magic. The camera enables the character to bound across the screen and back again, which gives Walken an unexpected power. The simple concept of fantastically and unexpectedly losing control in a civilized environment is shown in a complex and artistic manner. So, you see, dance choreographed for the camera is a powerful form of expression.

Mcdonald’s Healthier Happy Meals Essay

In order to successfully make these changes McDonald’s hired a research group to conduct an extensive research and present them with a cost effective solution. The Research Questions The questions the company had to look into to resolve this issue was: * How can they make the meals for the children healthier while maintaining the convenience that fast food is known for? * How can they cut the calories from their existing meals? * How can they make healthy food desirable to children? * How can they keep these healthier options cost effective? * What would be the best marketing strategy to launch these healthier changes? The Hypothesis A hypothesis explores a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation (Merriam-Webster, 2013). In the exploration to raise a question and find an answer, the company has to face the question: how can they make the meals for the children healthier while maintaining the convenience that fast food is known for? Through the years McDonald’s has added a couple new features to their menu like a wider selection in desserts, a value menu, and select new refreshing healthier choices to their fast food chain. But the question now is, how can they further cut the calories from these meals? Yes, McDonald’s has gained a fine respect in the fast food industry for upgrading to healthier choices, but now the kids menu may need some revamping on their own. If the regular menu can provide healthier choice selections like salads, less than 400 calories, and weight watcher approved items, what can they do about happy meals? A solution to providing a healthier selection is to offer a more beneficial meal that kids can enjoy. Apple bags, celery sticks, carrots, reduced milk, baked instead of fried items and healthier meat. Those are just a couple of suggestions to an issue that is easy to solve. The main purpose is to change the world one step at a time, and healthier living for is the new road to take. The Variables Local societies are becoming more health conscience and looking for healthier options when going out to eat. Even though McDonald’s did not follow the popular approach by luring people in through the use of famous celebrities, people felt that offering toys with their Happy Meals were unacceptable. The variables in a research scenario are considered to be independent (IV) and dependent variables (DV). In this research scenario the independent variables are the food and the marketing strategy, while the amount of calories and interest of the children are the dependent variables. Many children were attracted to McDonald’s Happy Meals for the toy they got with it and this is what their marketing strategy revolved around. In April 2012, The Time’s released the article â€Å"Why we’re eating fewer happy meals†. The article’s main focus was McDonald’s use of toys with their Happy Meals and the use of a clown who â€Å"is hell-bent on the creepy mission of luring children into McDonald’s, where they’ll be fattened up and primed for a lifetime of regular fast-food dining visits† (Tuttle, 2012, p. 1). Along with improving their Happy Meals, McDonald’s has also changed their marketing strategy. They still offer the toys but it is no longer their main focal point. Instead they now show Ronald McDonald playing around, participating in healthy activities and proclaiming that a healthier life style is a lot of fun.
